The Pros and Cons of CAT tools

Hi,

I've been translating for quite some time but never used CAT tools. Having just been asked by an agency for the umpteenth time whether I use Trados, I decided to flick through the forums here and see what all the fuss is about. There are several very interesting posts on the pros and cons of different CAT tools but I couldn't see any that discuss why one might want to get a CAT tool in the first place. So what do they do and why should I consider getting one?
